After my sister died, I didn't feel the need to go to any support groups because I thought I could cope on my own. It wasn't until I started attending the COPE sibling group that I realized I needed the support and sensitivity of people who have suffered a similar loss.  G.J.

COPE Hotline (COPEline)
The COPE Hotline (COPEline) is a resource for grieving individuals with an immediate need for support. Each caller reaches a COPEline volunteer who has been trained by a psychologist. Volunteers respond to the caller in a personalized way; providing resources, referrals and information or simply offering emotional support.

Support Groups

Parents
COPE parent support group meetings take place on the 1st Wednesday of the month on the South Shore at the Oceanside Jewish Center, 2860 Brower Ave. in Oceanside, and on Thursdays evenings on the North Shore at the Elias Hicks Historical Home in Jericho (1740 Old Jericho Turnpike). Additionally, COPE offers a Newly Bereaved Parent Support Group one Tuesday evening a month (the 3rd or 4th) at Temple Emanuel in East Meadow (123 Merrick Avenue) and one Monday evening a month at the Elias Hicks Home in Jericho.  Our support group meetings are facilitated by licensed social workers and run from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.

COPE also offers "Spirituality Groups" for those parents and siblings interested in this type of support. Please check the calendar section of this website for exact meeting dates and locations.

Siblings
COPE adult sibling support group meetings take place on a Saturday once a month for adult siblings in New York City and one Monday evening per month (usually the 4th Monday) in Jericho for adult siblings on Long Island.  Our young sibling support groups (for ages 3-10 and 11-17) meet on Thursday afternoons in Jericho, from 4:30 - 5:45 p.m.  All of our groups are facilitated by licensed social workers.

Art Therapy
"Art therapy is an established mental health profession that uses the expressive process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. It is based on the belief that the process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight." COPE Art therapy meets on Mondays from 12:30 noon - 2:30 p.m. at either the Elias Hicks Historical Home in Jericho (1740 Old Jericho Turnpike), or at one of our art therapist's homes on the South Shore (Freeport or Merrick).  Recent projects have included book making, mosaics, clay workshops, and much more. Movement Therapy
Danskinetics, also called “Spirit in Motion™” is a transformative movement experience designed to give the participant unique joy of free body expression through guided movement inspired by exciting, multicultural music.  Danskinetics was developed by Kripalu (a world-renowned Yoga Center in Lenox, MA) over a twenty year period.  It draws from the roots of yoga that explore’s one’s awareness of body and self.  It is a creative and internal approach to fitness and a celebration of inner freedom and self expression.

COPE offers Movement Therapy classes on occasional Mondays from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m., facilitated by certified Danskinetics instructor Ghislaine Grillo. Music Therapy
Music Therapy involves the use of toning and chanting, ancient vocal techniques, for healing, energizing, relaxation and community.  Additionally, drums, which have been used for thousands of years in ritual, as well as a variety of percussion instruments, are used for communicating, celebrating and articulating feelings.  Workshop participants will discover their own voice through rhythmic activity and learn about the health benefits of vocals and drumming.  You do not need to be musically inclined to attend!

Special Workshops
Throughout the month COPE offers special workshops for our members as well as for the healing community, such as clergy and mental health professionals.  Examples of these special events include talks by authors of books about bereavement, inspirational speakers, a book club, a clergy forum, and our fall Healing Event.  Our calendar is constantly updated to reflect these special workshops and events. Additionally, our members receive a monthly email newsletter which offers details about these and other events happening within the bereavement community.
