“What will I do with my love for you?” a grieving mother calls out in desperation.
“Just love me,” she hears her son say.

“But where are you?” She asks.
“I’m here,” he answers with frustration. And then he is gone.

In a recent NY Times article Nora Wong, poignantly describes the feeling she experienced of her son speaking to her months after he died.

As I related to her struggle to find comfort in his message, I began to relive my desperate quest to find a new relationship with my daughter. I have continued to find new ways to love her, pledging to love and carry her inside of me for the rest of my life.

January marks a milestone of the years since she’s lived. It’s far more difficult during holidays and these times, as it was in my early grief, to find ways to love her in her absence and to feel her presence.

She lives within me forever young, forever 20, now 25 years later.

Others will carry her as they move forward with their lives, in their own way. Some will be able to speak of her. Some cannot. I look for her in others, in her friends, my children, my grandchildren, in my niece and grandchild who look like her, and I love her through them.

As we carry the love for our loved ones into another year without them, I ask:
How can we take the pain of our loss and transform it into the beauty of their lives?

How do we find a new way to love them and carry them with us throughout our lives when all we have left is our love for them?

Some of the ways I and others in COPE have done this has been:
  • Helping others
  • Making new creations through art, music, dance, a garden…
  • A project in their name
  • Taking on a quality of theirs and making it our own
  • Exploring that quality, in their name
  • Finding:
    • Places to travel
    • Something to tend
    • Something to nurture
    • Something to cultivate
    • Some dream or mountain to climb

Perhaps  we can share new outlets for our love in the coming new year and the different ways we will continue to love them!

Love is powerful!
Wishing you new ways in 2017 to fill your heart with peace and comfort.

COPE Healing Tip of the Month
From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

Now that you have managed to make it through the rigors of the holiday season, the new year is a perfect time to try out new ways of doing things. As you continue on your grief journey you can try out new perspectives for understanding your experiences, new ways to support yourself and those around you and test out different ways of simply being. Mindfulness is the practice of focusing on this moment. We humans, spend a great deal of time focused on the past or worrying about the future. But the only time we actually have any control over is now, this moment. And in this moment we can choose how we will be, just for now, just for this breath. Take a purposeful pause and count a few breaths, just noticing what happens when you stop and breathe, and you will shift the mood.

Here are some mindfulness-based strategies from this month’s Book Corner Book, “Wise Mind, Open Mind,” that may be helpful along your healing journey.

Six Mindful Strategies to Recover from Trauma, Loss & Change

Reach out for Support: Don’t try to bear your trauma alone. Ask for assistance from your friends, spiritual leaders, support groups and professionals.

Sit Quietly and Reflect: No matter the severity of your trauma, sit quietly and ask yourself, “Historically have I experienced other challenges in my life and how did I navigate through them?” Now use these past experiences to tap into your internal courage and strength and explore if you can implement the same strategies again.

Trust Your Inner Resources: Once you realize that you survived other traumas before now trust in yourself to know that you have the ability to get through your present challenge.

Learn to Keep Yourself Centered through the Unbearable Feelings of Grief: When the waves of sadness and helplessness wash over you initially feel the emotion and it’s depth but then start to breathe through the grief with slow deep breaths. This will help you stay grounded and bring you back to the present.

Start Imagining a New Life: Even though you are experiencing immense grief start to imagine and invent in your mind’s eye a new future for yourself.

Practice Mindfulness: While doing grounding practices such as meditation, yoga, or even walks in nature remember that your loss is cyclical like the seasons. Even when we are in the depths of winter we know that eventually it will become more manageable with advent of summer. Learn to tolerate and pace yourself through the most severe times.

You have the ability to tap into your inner courage, move forward with your life and even reinvent yourself.

Poem

Someone I love has gone away
and life is not the same,
the greatest gift that you can give
is just to speak their name.

I need to hear the stories
and the tales of days gone past,
I need for you to understand
these memories must last.

We’ll never make more memories
since they are no longer here,
so when you say their name to me
it’s music to my ear.

Wise Mind, Open Mind: Finding Purpose and Meaning in Times of Crisis, Loss, and Change by Ronald Alexander PhD
Though it’s nearly impossible to imagine, times of personal crisis and upheaval are opportunities for self-reinvention and heightened artistic expression. Whether you are healing from a severed relationship, experiencing a job loss, or coping with another traumatic life transition, you can renew your strength and find new passion and purpose after things fall apart.
Wise Mind, Open Mind offers a powerful three-step mindfulness approach to help you navigate times of unwanted change, rediscover your inner well of creativity, and move forward with passion and purpose. This book combines techniques drawn from contemporary mind-body approaches, Buddhist psychology, mindfulness, creative thinking, and positive psychology to show you how to tap into your gifts and create a practical plan for personal transformation that will help you move through the challenges you face. You’ll learn to overcome the five common hindrances that may be keeping you from true fulfillment and happiness. Finally, you’ll be able to embrace your circumstances, utilizing them to create a renewed personal vision and welcome new possibilities and greater creativity into your life.

An Ode to My Grief
By Esther Bogin

My son Heath is with me in my good and bad times, even though he died March 8, 2015.  The hole in my being (my heart, soul and life) is always with me in my good and bad times.  Sometimes this pain is so hurtful that I wonder if it will ever go away.  Will I always feel this pain?  Sometimes I actually choose to remind myself of this pain when it is overshadowed by my laughter and enjoyment of those “bittersweet moments.”  The hole- that missing part – is always with me.  No matter what.

Knowing that I will never again touch, hug, kiss and see my son in the physical sense is a reality.  Missing my son is also a reality.  Most of all, the immense love I have for my son is the biggest reality.

One day I received a text message from a friend who wrote, “…you should read this…”  What perfect timing.  There is no such thing as a coincidence.  At that very moment I was suffering from the cutting edges of the holiday seasons.  The quote in the text was sent with no title and no known author, so I called it an ode to my grief.   Here it is.   “Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love.  It’s all the love you want to give but cannot.  All of that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in the hollow part of your chest.  Grief is just love with no place to go.”

After reading it, I had an epiphany.  Finally, I was given an answer to my question.: will I always feel this pain?   Of course I will.  I have to.  My love for my Heath is powerful – indestructible – infinite.   So is my grief.  It is that very grief – the love for my son – that has no place to go except within my heart and my memory.   As that love is with me always, so is my son, my Heath.
