Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

“Sorrow makes us all children again…destroys all differences of intellect.

The wisest know nothing.”

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

My daughter often collected inspiring quotes. Looking through my book, Grief Quest, I came across this quote which particularly resonated with me.

“Sorrow makes us all children again”

Feeling vulnerable, unprotected…disempowered.

We must nurture ourselves as we would our children.

“Destroys all differences of intellect”

All that’s left is the fragility of our emotions.

“The wisest know nothing”

There are no answers. Each of us is left to find out own way.

Our journey is unique, individual…back to a life forever changed.

COPE offers us support in many ways.

In our differences we can find meaning.

In our shared helplessness we can find strength.

We can find hope in helping.

Courage in sharing.

Caring in asking.

Wisdom in seeking.

Peace in believing.

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

The Seasons of Grief: Winter to Spring

There are crocuses in the yard.

How did spring sneak in so stealthily? You may not feel ready for spring. Winter might have felt as if it fit your mood, your grief. Now there are flowers in the yard and a garden to tend. Things are growing. Life marches forward, even when we aren’t ready.  Spring reminds us of this.

When grief hits it’s like a winter of the soul. Parts of us freeze in time. Not dead, but dormant. Pain blankets our emotional landscape like a fresh snow. It smothers greenery and muffles sound. Parts of us peak out, foraging to survive. It’s a state of emotional survival. Oddly, at some point there is comfort in not having to grow, expand, or reach for the sun.

You may not feel ready, but it could be time to step into the sun. We are never fully healed. But it may be time to embrace the idea that life moves forward. It could be time to plan for the future again, not just survive the day. Within you are gifts and talents to share and give back to the world. By stepping back out into the sun you may be able fulfill your mission, purpose, and dreams.

Love means wanting the best for each other. Whether it’s your child, parent, grandparents, sibling, husband, or wife, we seek to lift up our beloved and give them happiness. That’s simply the nature of true, healthy, love. If something were to happen to you, wouldn’t you want your loved ones to live a life of fulfillment and joy? Our lost loved ones want that for us too. They want us to be happy and even find new love. We honor them by rejoining life and growing again.

Life is a cycle. It doesn’t reach a set point and stop, even when something horrible happens. New days dawn and seasons pass, both on the calendar and in our soul. As they do, healing continues, but in new ways, ones that include personal growth and respecting the wishes our loved ones had for us.

Looking out at a bright day and the beginning blooms it may be time to accept spring. Your winter of grief served its purpose.

Stepping outside lift your face to the sun and feel both warmth and tears.

Poem

I am still with you

If it seems that I am far away on this empty and solemn day

Just open your heart and know it’s true

that I am still right here with you.

If during the day things are going wrong

please don’t feel sad and alone.

Just open your heart and know it’s true

that I am still right here with you.

When night time falls and the day is done

If you are feeling alone and sleep won’t come

Just open your heart and know it’s true

that I am still right here with you.

Close your eyes, and feel the warm embrace

Sleep peacefully in the wings of grace

If sadness finds you in the morning light

if you feel alone, don’t give up trying

Hold this feather close and know it’s true

that I am always here with you.

– Julie Johnson, Wings of Grace

COPE Book Corner

A Season of Grief

by Ann Dawson

Poignant, inspiring, and encouraging reflections for those who grieve from one who has been there. For Ann Dawson, her “season of grief” came with the death of her 18-year-old son, Andrew, who was killed in a car accident the summer after his high school graduation. As she sought to find meaning in the senselessness of her son’s death, Ann looked to the words of others who had grieved the loss of a loved one. In reading numerous books, she came to realize she was not alone in her sorrow, that others had walked this path of grief and transcended the pain. Now in A Season of Grief, she shares this realization with others. This book is a remarkable collection of quotations, personal reflections, and prayers intended for those who find themselves in their own “season of grief.” The insights and stories from Ann’s own experience are carefully placed along side the comforting and often inspiring words of writers like C.S. Lewis and Kahlil Gibran. Whether you’ve lost a child, a spouse, a parent, or a friend, A Season of Grief promises to be a comforting companion in the difficult days ahead.

If you have a book to recommend which you think will help our families along their path of healing, please email Stacey at scareri@copefoundation.org.

COPE and Centering Corporation

COPE has partnered with the Centering Corporation to provide you with easy access to grief resources through our website. You can easily access Centering Corporations vast array of resource from the home page of COPE’s website, the left or top tool bar where is says, “Grief Resource Center”.

When checking out on the Centering Corporation’s website, COPE hopes that you will enter the coupon code “COPE” where it asks for “Input Coupon or Promotional Code”. Doing so will enable 10% of your purchases to be directed back to COPE to help fund the grief support programs we offer parents, siblings and families living with the loss of a child.  COPE thanks you for your support.

COPE has published its very own Kindle book on how bereaved parents can COPE with their loss!  The Kindle book, “COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A CHILD: Strategies for Living with Loss & How Friends Can Help” is available on Amazon.
