Words from COPE President and Founder,

Lillian Julien

Dear COPE Families,

I was shattered by the loss of my child until I gradually found pieces of myself and strength to move forward.

Mother’s Day is a day that I struggle with to find ways to connect with my daughter and feel her with me.

I was lying in meditation this past week in a yoga class.
The music playing was “We are the Light.”
My mind went to the words written on my daughter’s gravestone… “Our Light.”
As the music played, I had the sudden awareness of that light being inside of me.
It is not only her light that guides me but “our light” that connects us.
I’ve found that only in spiritual connection can I find peace.

As mothers, we carry and give birth to our children.
As mothers we continue to carry our children inside of our being.
They are a part of us…in mind, in heart, in body and spirit.
My thoughts go out to all mothers.
And to all of our children who made us mothers.
And to all of our mothers who gave us life.
And to the love and light that connects us eternally.

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

You Are Not Going Crazy, It’s Grief

Most of us functioned fairly competently in our day-to-day lives—holding jobs or going to school, managing families, reading books, taking care of our health, entertaining friends and family—right up until someone we loved stopped living. Instantly we become disorganized, distracted, distraught, distressed, and disoriented. It’s no wonder everything seems foggy. The things we once did by habit even seem difficult, to say nothing of the more challenging tasks.

Grief can cause confusion, forgetfulness, anxiety, and a lack of concentration we call “Brain Fog.” Have you put the ice cream away in the pantry and the car keys in the freezer? Have you missed an appointment? Or forgotten to brush your teeth? You may have worried that you were going crazy or starting to show early signs of dementia. But these symptoms, the fog and the mental confusion, are actually symptoms of extreme stress and grief. When you are trying to read a book, or concentrate on a movie but find you have no idea what you just read or saw, you have Brain Fog. Grief causes brain fog, because not only are you sad and missing the person you’ve lost, but your brain is preoccupied by the “what if” and “if only” thoughts that are a normal and natural reaction to loss.

To help clear some of that fog you need to acknowledge it first. You aren’t going crazy, and you can help yourself focus, but you will benefit from staying with the feelings for a while so you can process them. It is normal to drift out of focus in response to conscious or unconscious memories of the person who died. When you notice this happening, take a “grief break” with someone you trust; it might help you get back to focus. If you can avoid making big decisions for a while, you might try to wait so that more of your mental capacity comes back on line. It is also important to take care of the physical—nourish your body with healthy food and water. If you are not sleeping well, it could be a good time to seek help for that. Most importantly, be gentle with yourself, this fog is normal and will, with time, become easier to manage.

Poem

OUR LOVING SON KENNETH LACKS

They say there is a reason,
They say that time will heal,
But neither time nor reason,
Will change the way we feel,
For no one knows the heartache,
That lies behind our smile.
No one knows how many times,
We have broken down and cried.
We want to tell you something,
So there won’t be any doubt,
You are so wonderful to think of,
But so hard to be without
FOREVER & ALWAYS LOVED, MOM & DAD

May 2017

Tom’s Mom, Janet Shavel writes:

As all of us grieve the loss of our children, somehow for me – perhaps others, the date of my son Tom’s birth is a difficult day.

My son would have been 45 on April 21st-I buried him on my birthday, Aug 31st – It will be 7 years this August. Who said Birthdays HAVE to be happy? All the balloons, greeting cards, phone calls, and exchanges from friends and neighbors say “happy birthday” on one’s day of birth.  Yes, it was happy for my parents, but little did I know as a baby 68 years ago, that my birthday as well as other days during the year is a sad reminder that on that date I buried Tom in the boiling heat.  I can still see the coffin placed down on the terrain. I see my other 2 sons laying down their rose and saying bye Tom.  It even breaks my heart to clearly see their pain and sorrow and sometimes guilt. That goes with the death process.  I guess the answer for me was to visit him at the cemetary ON HIS BIRTHDAY. I VISIT HIM ON THE DATE OF HIS death, August 26th 2010 – 7 days after I buried my Mom suddenly as well.  I do receive a little peace and solitude inside so that I can say to him this birthday – Happy Birthday Tom. I miss you and Love you- As the heat of the sun bakes my skin I can feel his presence around me and tears staining the skin on my face.  I look up and I see his memory as if it were yesterday.
Happy Birthday Tom.
Love Mom

Camp Erin® New York City – COPE Foundation

COPE’s Bereavement Camp for Children Ages 6 – 17
August 25 – 27, 2017

Lilly and Staff at  the Bowling Event
                         in NYC

Hi,
Oh, what a night!

Over a hundred family, friends, staff and Camp Erin families came out to support Camp Erin NYC on April 3rd at our 4th annual Bowling event. We ate, we drank, we bowled, we laughed, we had fun and we even drummed!

We exceeded our fundraising goal, thanks to the generosity of compassionate friends, family and staff. Represented this year were TWO families who have directly benefited from Camp Erin’s weekend. They came together with friends to pay it back and raise funds so more children can experience our amazing weekend of hope and healing.

One of our dedicated volunteers- our percussionist -shared his magic and our supporters got a  glimpse into what we do at camp. One hundred pairs of drum sticks were flailing around- no one was injured- but the beat was heard far and wide!

Our thanks to everyone for going the extra mile and fundraising and participating! For the campers, it is a win, win!

Getting busy prepping for the summer. Please spread the word about camp and send them our way.

NEED SUPPLIES:
Looking for 2 or 5 gallon plastic buckets to make our drums that the campers play and take home (Home Depot, Lowes etc, restaurants….) Anyone have any connections?

Enjoy the spring!
Best,
Ann

About COPE Labyrinth:
COPE Foundation now has a permanent memorial labyrinth in Eisenhower Park’s Memorial Plaza, with bricks and benches dedicated to our children, siblings, and loved ones.
The labyrinth is an ancient symbolic path with healing and spiritual significance. It has been used within many cultures and spiritual traditions throughout the world.
For many, labyrinths represent life’s journey or spiritual pilgrimage.
Walking the labyrinth often produces a calming, centering feeling. This alternating balancing motion can quiet one’s body, mind and spirit, often inducing a receptive state for meditation and contemplation in the center of the labyrinth.
