COPE November Newsletter

Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

Dear COPE Families,

As we approach the holidays and grow anxious in anticipation, we can make choices that can bring us some peace and comfort.

Even a holiday like Halloween can bring up pain since it reminds us of a time when our children were young and happy. Costumes. Carving pumpkins. Candy. So many memories of a sweeter time. Now we wear our own masks to conceal our discomfort with the many Halloween decorations that remind us of death. We can look away but they surround us everywhere. Where will we put our thoughts? Where will we decide to be?

I remember my disappointment as a child trick-or-treating when I arrived at a house left dark. After the loss of my daughter, Michelle, my house was left dark and nobody was home. And then gradually, there was a dish of candy left at the driveway, and then a light on and the dish by the door with a few small pumpkins. And yet, when I see Halloween decorations today, I still look away and make a choice not to be home.

Halloween takes us into November and December, and the more difficult holidays we have yet to navigate. During Halloween we can practice making choices and taking actions that will give us peace and comfort.

Lilly

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

Healing Tip: November 2015

Journaling and other forms of writing can be helpful for healing. Journals can store our innermost thoughts and feelings and provide a healthy release of emotions. Journaling can provide you time to attend to your grief and it offers a tool for identifying and processing grief reactions. While the inner world of grief feels chaotic, journaling can help by adding structure for clarifying your experiences.

Here are some ideas and suggestions for writing your way through grief. You can accomplish most in 15 minutes or less, which is helpful because especially when grief is new, feelings can be close to the surface and pain is raw so short writes are less likely to pitch you into feeling overwhelmed.

  • First: There aren’t any rules. You don’t have to do it every day. You don’t have to spell the words right, or punctuate them, or worry about grammar. Give yourself permission to write whatever comes. You’re not being judged or graded by anyone else, so please don’t judge or grade yourself.
  • Choose a journal that fits your lifestyle and feels comfy and nurturing. Find a book you can carry with you or if you are at your computer, keep your journal digital.
  • Write three words that describe your feelings at the beginning and end of every journal entry. This will help you track your feelings over time and gives you an opportunity to see how your emotions shift with time and process.
  • Set a timer and write for a preset number of minutes — 5, 10, 15 (more, if you have time, energy and desire). When the timer buzzes, close your book or file and move on. [Come back as often as you wish.]
  • Make lists. Lists are great for organizing and categorizing, and their structure is comforting when things feel like they are spinning out of control. Write lists of your emotions, memories, plans, ideas, fantasies and more.

Come to our “Journal Yourself Through the Holidays” Workshop on 11/17!

Poem

I Am Still With You

I am still with you

by Julie Johnson, Wings of Grace

If it seems that I am far away on this empty and solemn day

Just open your heart and know it’s true

that I am still right here with you.

If during the day things are going wrong

please don’t feel sad and alone.

Just open your heart and know it’s true

that I am still right here with you.

When night time falls and the day is done

If you are feeling alone and sleep won’t come

Just open your heart and know it’s true

that I am still right here with you.

Close your eyes, and feel the warm embrace

Sleep peacefully in the wings of grace

If sadness finds you in the morning light

if you feel alone, don’t give up trying

Hold this feather close and know it’s true

that I am always here with you.

COPE Reiki Workshop for Parents and Adult Siblings

Monday, November 16th at 7:00 p.m.

COPE House at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow (Field 6A)

Join COPE and Reiki healers Mimi Toomey and Susan Gelbman for our next monthly “Healing from the Inside Out” program. The Reiki Circle workshop will be held on Monday, November 16, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the COPE House in Eisenhower Park, East Meadow (Field 6A). The evening will begin with a guided meditation, followed by each attendee setting his or her own intention. Mimi will then give Reiki to each person in the Reiki Circle, set to soothing music.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect.

RSVP to Karen Flyer at karen@copefoundation.org by Friday, November 7th. There is a limit of 20 people for the workshop. Please only RSVP if you are fairly certain you can attend as last minute cancelations and no shows make it difficult for us to offer the space to those on the waiting list.

The COPE Art Workshop will meet on Monday, November 2nd from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the COPE House in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. You do NOT have to be an artist or have artistic “talent” to participate.

Projects will include working on the branch for the wishing tree, creating inspirational smooth rocks, and continuing to work on mosaics. These items will all be placed around the labyrinth and/or included in the dedication ceremony.

Please RSVP to Karen Flyer at karen@copefoundation.org for any week you wish to attend!

Writing Workshop for Parents

Tuesday, November 17th from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

COPE House at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow (Field 6A)

The COPE Writing Workshop “Journal Yourself Through the Holidays” will meet on Tuesday, November 17th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the COPE House in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. It will be facilitated by Patty Rossi.

Join us and learn how the art of writing can serve as a therapeutic tool in coping with the upcoming holiday season. This writing workshop will encourage participants to discover their inner artistic voice as they decorate a journal and then express their feelings and emotions in written word on the pages of the embellished journal. Come explore the mighty pen as a source of comfort and as a means of healing.

Patricia Rossi is a freelance artist, published author and grant writer. She has extensive experience serving as a writing facilitator. Since 2009 she has created and implemented writing workshops for cancer survivors at the cancer and wellness center in Bay Shore in conjunction with Good Samaritan Hospital. Patricia is also a writing facilitator at the Circle of Hope in Merrick, where she provides writing workshops for individuals coping with their own illness and/or the illness of a family member. In addition Patricia has received state funded grants and she has utilized the funds to provide writing workshops as a means of empowerment specifically for women residing in underserved areas in Nassau County. Many of Patricia’s written works, her prose, poetry and personal essays have been published in Newsday, featured in magazines and literary journals. One of her academic articles is set for publication this December. Most recently, one of Patricia poems was nominated for the 2016 pushcart prize.
