Words from COPE President and Founder Lilly Julien

Dear COPE Families,

“Every sinking into despair has within it an energy to move us higher.”

-Dr. Wayne Dyer

Only in retrospect can I understand this quote. In the immediate aftermath of losing my daughter, all I was able to see or feel was unbearable, overwhelming sadness.

I had little or no “energy to move higher” and all I could anticipate was sorrow and despair. I let go and surrendered with every sinking of despair into a deep melancholy that turned into isolation. What I eventually discovered was that the waves of grief were only temporary, followed by a numbness, at first confusing, and then a welcomed respite.

I was desperate for some relief, some way to heal my heart and elevate my soul so that I might connect with my daughter. It was that agony that made me read books, seek out alternative healing, receive a massage, be comforted by Reiki, explore past lives or any spiritual possibility that might bring comfort and eventual healing.

So in retrospect I understand how “Every sinking into despair has within it an energy to move us higher.” It’s our pain that forces us to act—try new things, anything to feel better. In that search, we grow without even realizing it.

My quest, over many years, has taken me to a higher place than I could imagine and has brought me to a deeper connection and a new relationship with my daughter.

May you find relief and comfort on your journey…

Lilly

COPE Healing Tip of the Month

From COPE Clinical Director Amy Olshever, PhD, LCSW

Healing Tip: September 2015

Everyday thousands of people participate in grief support online. This might be in a forum, a message board or on a Facebook page. This support can be great, especially when it is used together with some form of face to face support, like a group or individual therapy session. But it’s important to recognize that all websites are not equal.

How do you know that the site you find is safe, reliable, and offers accurate information? Here are some precautions you can take before deciding to join any online grief forum or message board:

  • Investigate before you participate. Does that have a sponsor? What are they selling?
  • Is the site moderated? Read about the moderators to learn about their background, education, training, licensure and certification. Make sure they have experience in facilitating groups and knowledge about the normal grief process. Read some posts written by the moderators to get a sense of their approach to grieving people.
  • Make certain that the group or forum you select is made up of mourners with whom you can identify. Read some of the posts in a given forum to decide if you can relate to the people gathered there.
  • Look for a statement of the group’s purpose and its “ground rules.” These should appear on the site’s main (or “home”) page.
  • Look for an option that enables you to report to the moderator(s) any post that you find objectionable.
  • Use your own good judgment and common sense. If something doesn’t feel right, if you don’t feel safe, accepted or understood, trust your instincts, leave immediately and find another group.

Poem

Tis a Fearful Thing

by Yehuda HaLevi (1075 – 1141)

‘Tis a fearful thing

to love what death can touch.

A fearful thing

to love, to hope, to dream, to be –

to be,

And oh, to lose.

A thing for fools, this,

And a holy thing,

a holy thing

to love.

For your life has lived in me,

your laugh once lifted me,

your word was gift to me.

To remember this brings painful joy.

‘Tis a human thing, love,

a holy thing, to love

what death has touched.

COPE Book Corner

Exploring the Labyrinth: A Guide for Healing and Spiritual Growth

By Melissa Gayle West

The oldest and most universally known labyrinth existed over 3,500 years ago on the Greek island of Crete–home of the mythical Minotaur. Now, over three millennia later, walking the labyrinth has become an astonishingly popular form of spiritual and emotional growth and healing. In fact, walking the labyrinth has proven itself to be so transformative and soothing, labyrinths are now being built on school playgrounds, university campuses, hospital courtyards, and even prison grounds.

Why the sudden surge in popularity? “Walking the labyrinth fulfills six important contemporary needs,” according to author and psychotherapist Melissa Gayle West: “deepening spirituality; inwardness and connection; access to intuition and creativity; simplicity; integration of body and spirit; and intimacy and community.” These are tall orders, but West manages to demystify this powerful process, explaining how it differs from walking a maze and how readers can make their own labyrinths. The book’s narrative and organization themselves flow as thoughtfully and compellingly as a labyrinth. The three main sections cover “Meeting the Labyrinth,” “Making the Labyrinth,” and “Playing and Healing with the Labyrinth.” West also offers an extensive resource listing and a thorough index. This is easily one of the best contemporary guidebooks on this fascinating and evolving form of spiritual practice.

COPE Dance Workshop for Parents and Adult Siblings

Thursday, September 24th at 7:00 p.m.

COPE House at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow (Field 6A)

Join COPE and healer Elyce Neuhauser for our next monthly “Healing from the Inside Out” program. The “Trance Dance” workshop will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the COPE House in Eisenhower Park, East Meadow (Field 6A).

Trance Dance is an extraordinary breath-driven moving experience, unlike any yoga or movement class you’ve ever attended. It opens us up to emotions, feelings, sensations and vibrations. We move free-form, guided by our breath and our energy to world, rock and dance beats and to live drumming as we share candlelit space with incredible, energetic bodies. We conclude with deep savasana and a chocolate and elixir meditation.

Elyce Neuhauser leads Prana Flow vinyasa classes and Trance Dance events on Long Island and in New York City. She is continuously fascinated and moved by the amazing poetry of the body, and her classes are juicy experiences that allow participants to connect deeply with every aspect of themselves. Elyce continues to be inspired by her main teachers, global yoga adventurer and creator of Yoga Trance Dance Shiva Rea, and leading meditation innovator Lorin Roche.

RSVP to Karen Flyer at karen@copefoundation.org by Friday, September 17th. There is a limit of 15 people for the workshop. Please only RSVP if you are fairly certain you can attend as last minute cancelations and no shows make it difficult for us to offer the space to those on the waiting list.
